”This project marks the first engagement at our new venue located at the new luxury boutique hotel Hotel Danmark in the heart of Copenhagen. The leading boutique hotel chains, Brøchner Hotels, recently did a complete makeover of the hotel which now stands as a very cool and inspiring environment for The Standard Jazz Club. The Opening Engagement also marks our official welcome to the extraordinary drummer from New York, Victor Jones who recently decided to make Copenhagen his new permanent home. Victor is perhaps best known as the drummer for Stan Getz, but has also worked for many other notables, such as Little Jimmy Scott, Chaka Khan and Michel Petrucciani.

Niels Lan Doky
A generation younger than artists like Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny, pianist, producer and composer Niels Lan Doky is one of the most prolific and unique jazz artists of his generation. He has released 39 albums to date, collaborated with the greatest artists in jazz and won countless awards and accolades around the world, and was knighted by HM the Queen of Denmark in 2010. When his debut album was released in 1986, the American jazz writer Dan Morgenstern wrote: “There is nothing more encouraging and satisfying than to encounter for the first time a young jazz musician of real stature, someone who can make you feel that the future of the music is in good hands. There can not be the slightest doubt that Doky’s talent is of real significance – that rare thing in the Jazz of our time, an original voice in the great tradition”.
Best known as the drummer of Stan Getz, Little Jimmy Scott, Chaka Khan and Michel Petrucciani – Victor Jones has also worked with Woody Shaw, James Moody, Wynton Marsalis, Nile Rogers and many more. Recognized as one of the most prolific and eclectic drummers in jazz today, he appears on more than two hundred recordings and sound tracks. A two time Grammy nominee – one time winner, and a one time Oscar nominated artist . Victor began his musical journey back in the late 60s as a classical trumpet player in his home town of East Orange New Jersey. After 10 years of studying trumpet he became interested in the drums from listening to Ringo and the Beatles and then discovered the music of James Brown, Jimmy Hendrix, John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

One of the permanent members of the Niels Lan Doky Trio is this phenomenal young Dane – the incredible bassist named Tobias Dall . He is amongst the most impressive and significant jazz talents to emerge out of Denmark in many years and he tours regularly with Debbie Sledge and Niels Lan Doky, appearing in major capitals such as London, Paris, Tokyo and beyond.
Copenhagen’s Jazz Scene
Back in the 1960s and 1970s numerous African-American jazz legends flooded into Copenhagen. Drawn by the freedom from segregation, quality of life, and the Danes’ receptiveness to jazz, musicians like Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Thad Jones, Ed Thigpen, Oscar Pettiford, and others settled down and, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, built an extraordinary historical pocket in the development of jazz and fuelled the emergence of generations of highly accomplished Danish jazz artists. To this day, their impact is still evident, not only in the music but in street names and in graves placed near cultural Danish icons like Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kirkegaard. Niels Lan Doky recalls of the times, “This was an extraordinary moment in time. Many of us got to hang out, listen to, and play with these guys who were great masters. And we got inspiration, insight, wisdom and experience first hand from them”. In 1985 the most iconic of all jazz artists, Miles Davis, recorded his grammy awarded album “Aura” with Danish musicians in Copenhagen.
Today, drawn by a vibrant jazz environment, Copenhagen is once again being revived as a epicenter for jazz. This time however – in a clear sign of our times – the revival is truly global. American expats are still very much a part of the landscape, like Victor Jones who recently moved permanently to Copenhagen, or vocalists Nancy Harms and Debbie Sledge who spend several months a year here – but new countries are now represented also, with leading musicians from nations such as – for example – France (guitarist Marc Ducret), Hungary (tenor saxophonist Gabor Bolla) and the United Kingdom (trumpeter Gerard Presencer) choosing to make Denmark their new permanent home.
This revival can especially be seen and experienced every summer when this capital of only about 1 million people puts on the world’s largest jazz festival. Held since 1979 it boasts over 1,300 concerts in 10 days drawing around 300,000 visitors. Danes love their jazz. On a per capita basis they buy more jazz albums then anyone else in the world, and sport more jazz clubs than hubs like New York, Tokyo, Paris and London. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark helped set up the Ben Webster Foundation and has knighted several Danish jazz artists.
